Tecnodec
Michell's new entry-level turntable, taking the low-noise DC motor and the impedance-matched platter of the GyroDec, along with an advanced bearing on a simple solid-plinth design. Beautifully simple, the TecnoDec requires no user-setup or maintenance. Supplied with special RB250 tonearm.
In the July 2005 issue, Hi-Fi Choice Magazine ran a comparative group test of six turntables. The Michell Tecnodec was chosen group test winner and had the highest overall score. It was also the least expensive turntable of the group!
• "The star though is Michell’s TecnoDec. The cheapest of the group, it’s one of the best sounding, and it’s as smart as any. Michell’s reputation for lasting quality can’t hurt either, but its crisp, precise and extended sound is the clincher.” — Hi-Fi Choice Best Buy winner.
• "In fact the Michell Tecnodec with modified RB250 arm is so good that if you've got 4000$ to spend, it makes more sense to get it and a $2000 cartridge than it does to spend a wad on a 'table, then suffer till you can afford a really good cartridge." — Stereophile.
• "Superb introduction to Michell turntables on a budget. Top quality build and elegant design make it this the class of the mid price field" — Hi-Fi World.
Gyro SE mkII
The classic Michell turntable, refined over many years of development to its current level of performance. The MKII version of the Gyro SE has a silent European-made standalone DC motor and matching DC power supply. The Gyro features a suspended sub-chassis, a 4.5 kg impedance-matched co-polymer platter of high inertia, oil-pumping inverted bearing, and record clamp.
• "But it gets better. Add the optional QC power supply and things start to fly like the deck's taken a dose of 'pep' pills, the whole musical picture hanging together with a vice-like grip. Going the whole hog by slipping on the Rohmann cartridge introduces a significant jump in resolution. With the necessary ancillaries, the Gyro 'SE' competes in the same ball park as decks way above its price." — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "Once you hear the GyroDec SE Mk.II (or rather, don't hear it), you know it’s going to be in your system for the long haul. With a naturally balanced cartridge, I have not heard reproduced music sounding closer to live than through the GyroDec. I don't see the need to spend more on a turntable, even after hearing the big boys at various high end shows. This turntable is designed to provide long-term satisfaction, and is most highly recommended." — Positive Feedback Online.
• "...it's a powerful package of fine sound, peerless build and finish and genuine upgradeability - but at its price, it's nigh-on unbeatable" — Hi-Fi World.
• " ...a highly informative and musical turntable. Another classic reference, especially at the price." — Hi-Fi News and Record Reviews.
Orbe SE
The Michell flagship for music lovers who are not prepared to compromise. The Michell Orbe turntable takes the established concept of the GyroDec and adds to it an extra level of isolation, better structural damping, an improved motor drive system and 60mm thick co-polymer platter.
• "After a week's listening I can safely conclude that this turntable is one of the best money can buy. Timing, soundstage depth and sheer realism; a deck like this reminds one just how good vinyl is as a medium. No CD player costing less than a king's ransom comes close to its stunning realism and lucid coherence, and few turntables can match its supreme balance of tone and texture. It's a musical marvel." — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "A superb turntable, able to mix it with the best at virtually any price." — Best Buy and Editor's Choice winner, Hi-Fi Choice.
• "Fantastically capable all rounder with commanding, powerful, detailed sound that gets the best from almost any arm and cartridge. ... this turntable is one of the best money can buy" — Hi-Fi World.
Tecnoarm
The TecnoArm is a fundamental mechanical rebuild of the well-known RB250 tonearm, to which is added monolithic wiring of the highest quality. The arm tube is bead-blasted and perforated, which disperses structural resonances and yields a lower effective mass. The arm wand is internally damped to reduce resonance further, and the headshell is machined flat, to allow true azimuth relative to the bearing cradle. After modification the bearings are re-adjusted for highest possible performance.
• "If low colouration and evenhanded tonality is your priority, the arrival of the Michell Tecno Arm means you no longer have to save for a SME series IV or SME V. ... Michell now have an arm worthy of their turntables, an arm capable of making a synergistic match with models ranging from the Tecnodec, through Gyro variants right up to the Orbe." — TNT-Audio.
• "Highly dynamic and exciting performer with great bass resolution and an impressive soundstage... the best sounding arm at £400, and as good as some at four times the price." — Hi-Fi World.
Pro-Ject
Debut III
• "This is a solid, well-engineered deck... remarkably impressive budget turntable. ...For simplicity, usability and sound, the Debut III is astonishing value for money. If you listen to one of these, you won't for a second think vinyl is dead." — Group Test Winner, What Hi-Fi, 2004.
• “Absolutely incredible value for money.” — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "With a vibrant and musical sound, fine build and a decent cartridge, this is easily the best entry-level turntable around right now." — Hi-Fi World.
Xpression
• “Quality build, very good performance, a superb tonearm and easy of use marks the Pro-Ject 1 Xpression as a value for money leader, more than worthy of comparison with established class leaders like the Rega P2 and P3.” — Audio Enz.
• “...the Xpression - with that fantastic carbon-fibre arm - sets a standard that can only be bettered by doubling the price tag.” — Hi-Fi +.
• “The Pro-Ject conveys the emotion of vocals superbly, creating a deep, wide soundstage. Detail is impressive and treble is sweet. ...The Pro-Ject 1 Xpression is a great value deck that reminds you how good vinyl can sound.” — What Hi-Fi, Best Buy Award Winner.
• “ ...this is a surprisingly good deck for the money and it does space, light, energy and serious bass while keeping its finger on the musical pulse. Well designed and executed budget deck with an entertaining and revealing sound that will keep you up way too late.” — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "...fine build and blistering value for money turntable, arm and MC cartridge package." — Recommended component, Hi-Fi World.
• “ ...tonearms as good as this are a bit of a rarity on turntables costing twice the price. ...As a all-round performer, then, the Pro-Ject is a mighty impressive device. ...this is emphatically a five-star product. Overall this is a highly recommended deck.” — What Hi-Fi, 5 Star Group Test Winner.
• " If you want to get into analog without breaking the bank, I'd say go for it - the value for money is spectacular. Be sure to pick up the Speed Box while you're at it, and spring for a better cartridge when you can. And if your budget is bigger, you owe it to yourself to audition some of the other models in the Pro-Ject range,' — Enjoythemusic.com. • "...the 1 Xpression - with that fantastic carbon-fiber arm - sets a standard that can only be bettered by doubling the price tag." — Hi-Fi +.
• "To put it bluntly, this turntable delivers sound much superior to considerably more expensive CD players..." — The Inner Ear Report.
RPM 5
• “This turntable has great looks and an on the ball, engaging sound that puts it in the seriously grinworthy league. ...it’s excellent value for money.” — Hi-Fi Choice.
• “I didn't have a P3 on hand for direct comparison so at the $700 range sans cartridge, I'd check out both the RPM 5 and P3. One just might tickle your audio jones more than the other. However, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the RPM 5 came out on top. ...The RPM 5 is the third turntable I've sampled from the Pro-Ject stable and it may be the most successful yet in striking that magic balance between price, performance, accessories and appearance. The Ortofon Rondo Red is also worth putting on your list if you are looking for a clean and resolving $500 moving coil cartridge.” — 6moons.com
RPM 9 / RPM9.1
• "Despite its stylish look, the Pro-Ject RPM9.1's performance is far ahead of the lower-priced trendy turntables which are appearing during this renaissance of pure analogue hi-fi. ...the one-piece carbon-fibre tonearm can handle a wide range of quality cartridges, and offers high stability with low mass. Quality features such as the high-precision bearing deliver a convincing, dynamic and natural sound from your vinyl." — Hi-Fi News, Best product 2006-2007, & European Turntable of the year 2006-2007.
• “...the Pro-Ject RPM 9 is a no-nonsense, well-made, attractive turntable that provides sound and build quality that are significantly higher than you’d expect for its price. It’s rare for me to so thoroughly enjoy using what is nearly a budget-priced component. ...The Pro-Ject RPM 9 is highly recommended and a choice of this reviewer.” — Soundstage.
• “...handles a wide variety of material with transparency, liveliness, natural tonal balance, and rythmic precision. Solidly recommended.” — The Absolute Sound, Recommended component.
• “ ...this is a fabulous deck by any standards, with both the looks and the sound to take on the very best.” — What Hi-Fi, 5 Star Winner.
RPM 10
• “With no suspension to go out of tune, it’s much more of a fit and forget solution to getting great sound from vinyl ...a tidy deck capable of bringing very musical results, with rock solid pitch, thunderous bass and sweet treble. Impeccable finish completes an attractive package.” — Hi-Fi News.
• "Brilliant "fit and forget" deck that gives everything it plays a clean, warm, enjoyable sound..." — Recommended component, Hi-Fi World.
Dynavector
DV 10X5
• "The 10x5 has refined what I expect from a cartridge at this price point, eclipsing the old model and turning a real solid performer into something rather special, especially when the £250.00 price tag is taken into consideration." — Hi-Fi+, 2003.
• "Bar none, I found the Dynavector to be the best overall cartridge that I have had the opportunity to hear to date, and a tremendous value to boot." — TNT-Audio, 2003.
• "I think it offers a level of musicality and record enjoyment that far exceed its retail price." — Soundstage! 2003.
• "Wildly, highly recommended." — Stereophile, Recommended components 2005.
XX-2
• "The xx-2 is a stunning cartridge....It'll fit any quality arm and gives a totally unflappable performance." — TNT-Audio .
• "It leaned ever so slightly toward "rich" ...with a strong, lithe bass line and a sweet yet extended top end, but never sounded soft, clogged, or boring. The XX-2 excelled at portraying harmonic nuance, especially in the midband." — Stereophile, Recommended components.
Ortofon
Rondo Blue
• “On first listen, even without any break-in, the Rondo Blue immediately impresses. It's a crisp, articulate, well-behaved cartridge with an admirably neutral tonal balance. ...To tell the truth, I was a little apprehensive about plunging into a full-scale analog workout, as the idea of listening to a near-budget turntable and cartridge for months on end didn't exactly thrill me. However, during that time the Rondo Blue surprised me, drew me in and converted me, in exactly that order. ...There's an admirable gutsiness to the Rondo Blue's bass, an overachieving whip-crack quickness that added a seriously enjoyable foundation ...If you've read between the lines so far, you no doubt realize that the Rondo Blue is a great cartridge for reproducing rock music ...but it's by no means a one-trick pony. ...In the end, if you're looking for a sub-$1000 cartridge with great bass and an exceptionally neutral presentation, be sure to check out the Rondo Blue.” — Soundstage.
Rondo Bronze
• “I think it's safe to say that the Rondo Bronze will please music lovers, perhaps even tortured audiophiles. Why? It is a relative bargain, and it sounds nearly as rich as my three-times-as-costly Koetsu. ...The dynamics of the Rondo Bronze are part of what make this cartridge special. ...The improbably full-sounding Rondo allows detail to shine through and provides more dynamic engagement. Loud, raucous music is better served than it is by the Koetsu. If you value tonal richness and dynamics, do not have a taste for hyped-up detail, but do have a taste for musicality, the Rondo Bronze is a terrific cartridge.” — Positive-Feedback.
