JA Michell Engineering
Michell Engineering is a family run business that have been building quality audio turntables for over 35 years now, making them one of the most experienced manufacturers in the industry. Michell turntables are built in the UK to exacting standards and reproduce sound as close as possible to the mastertape. The quality of their designs has remained impressively high throughout the years and critics and music lovers continue to praise their latest incarnations of the legendary GyroDec and Orbe turntables.
Tecnodec
Michell's new entry-level turntable, taking the low-noise DC motor and the impedance-matched platter of the GyroDec, along with an advanced bearing on a simple solid-plinth design. Beautifully simple, the TecnoDec requires no user-setup or maintenance. Supplied with special RB250 tonearm.
In the July 2005 issue, Hi-Fi Choice Magazine ran a comparative group test of six turntables. The Michell Tecnodec was chosen group test winner and had the highest overall score. It was also the least expensive turntable of the group!
• "The star though is Michell’s TecnoDec. The cheapest of the group, it’s one of the best sounding, and it’s as smart as any. Michell’s reputation for lasting quality can’t hurt either, but its crisp, precise and extended sound is the clincher.” — Hi-Fi Choice Best Buy winner.
• "In fact the Michell Tecnodec with modified RB250 arm is so good that if you've got 4000$ to spend, it makes more sense to get it and a $2000 cartridge than it does to spend a wad on a 'table, then suffer till you can afford a really good cartridge." — Stereophile.
• "Superb introduction to Michell turntables on a budget. Top quality build and elegant design make it this the class of the mid price field" — Hi-Fi World.
Gyro SE mkII
The classic Michell turntable, refined over many years of development to its current level of performance. The MKII version of the Gyro SE has a silent European-made standalone DC motor and matching DC power supply. The Gyro features a suspended sub-chassis, a 4.5 kg impedance-matched co-polymer platter of high inertia, oil-pumping inverted bearing, and record clamp.
• "But it gets better. Add the optional QC power supply and things start to fly like the deck's taken a dose of 'pep' pills, the whole musical picture hanging together with a vice-like grip. Going the whole hog by slipping on the Rohmann cartridge introduces a significant jump in resolution. With the necessary ancillaries, the Gyro 'SE' competes in the same ball park as decks way above its price." — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "Once you hear the GyroDec SE Mk.II (or rather, don't hear it), you know it’s going to be in your system for the long haul. With a naturally balanced cartridge, I have not heard reproduced music sounding closer to live than through the GyroDec. I don't see the need to spend more on a turntable, even after hearing the big boys at various high end shows. This turntable is designed to provide long-term satisfaction, and is most highly recommended." — Positive Feedback Online. • "...it's a powerful package of fine sound, peerless build and finish and genuine upgradeability - but at its price, it's nigh-on unbeatable" — Hi-Fi World.
• " ...a highly informative and musical turntable. Another classic reference, especially at the price." — Hi-Fi News and Record Reviews.
Orbe SE
The Michell flagship for music lovers who are not prepared to compromise. The Michell Orbe turntable takes the established concept of the GyroDec and adds to it an extra level of isolation, better structural damping, an improved motor drive system and 60mm thick co-polymer platter.
• "After a week's listening I can safely conclude that this turntable is one of the best money can buy. Timing, soundstage depth and sheer realism; a deck like this reminds one just how good vinyl is as a medium. No CD player costing less than a king's ransom comes close to its stunning realism and lucid coherence, and few turntables can match its supreme balance of tone and texture. It's a musical marvel." — Hi-Fi Choice.
• "A superb turntable, able to mix it with the best at virtually any price." — Best Buy and Editor's Choice winner, Hi-Fi Choice.
• "Fantastically capable all rounder with commanding, powerful, detailed sound that gets the best from almost any arm and cartridge. ... this turntable is one of the best money can buy" — Hi-Fi World.
Tecnoarm
The TecnoArm is a fundamental mechanical rebuild of the well-known RB250 tonearm, to which is added monolithic wiring of the highest quality. The arm tube is bead-blasted and perforated, which disperses structural resonances and yields a lower effective mass. The arm wand is internally damped to reduce resonance further, and the headshell is machined flat, to allow true azimuth relative to the bearing cradle. After modification the bearings are re-adjusted for highest possible performance.
• "If low colouration and evenhanded tonality is your priority, the arrival of the Michell Tecno Arm means you no longer have to save for a SME series IV or SME V. ... Michell now have an arm worthy of their turntables, an arm capable of making a synergistic match with models ranging from the Tecnodec, through Gyro variants right up to the Orbe." — TNT-Audio.
• "Highly dynamic and exciting performer with great bass resolution and an impressive soundstage... the best sounding arm at £400, and as good as some at four times the price." — Hi-Fi World. ZYX
Zyx is regarded as one of the top cartridge manufacturers in the world. Their moving coil cartridges are designed and built in Japan by Mr. Hisayoshi Nakatsuka. By seperating the coils and their windings in a true dual mono configuration and by paying careful attention to vital mechanical and electrical aspects of the generator system, Mr. Nakatsuka has eliminated the causes of time distortion. The result is a sound that is supremely lucid, transparent, three dimensional and very neutral. R-100H
• " If the sound of the megabuck Myabi 47 is your target but you can't afford it, I've found your holy grail transducer — the ZYX R-100H. For $995, LP heaven awaits. ...It has amazing depth perspective and 3D sound. The stage width is staggering, amazing, wonderful. Imaging is precise and excellent — solid and secure, and close to the best to be had at any price. ...The ZYX is very, very neutral. ...The top end is excellent ...violins and flutes are spot on. I love the highs, and find them almost perfect. The mids are also excellent, with huge amounts of definition and great realism. ...Bass is deep, tight, and excellent, as uncolored as the mids, with superb impact. This is reference performance. With respect to dynamics, the ZYX is in a league of its own. ...It's hard to believe were discussing a $995 cartridge, not one that sells for $3000 to $4000 (US). ...The ZYX eclipses other $1000 cartridges by a gargantuan amount. ...At $995, it is a bargain times four. It is either excellent or state-of-the-art in all performance parameters." — Positive Feedback.
• " The R100H, however, is the clear star here, an astonishingly vivid, enthusiastic and energetic cartridge, this has a smooth detailed high-frequency range, a lush mid mated with stunning transparency, all coupled with bass dynamics which cartridges at twice its price struggle to match. The R100H is a genuine high end bargain." — Hi-Fi News.
• " Exceptionally tight sounding and detailed cartridge with the musical skills to match..." — Hi-Fi World, Recommended components.
Mørch Tonearms
The name Mørch has been well-known to Hi-Fi enthusiasts all over the world and is synonymous with quality. This Danish manufacturer has been involved in vinyl reproduction for over 25 years, and its UP-4 and DP-6 tonearms are widely acknowledged as being among the best and most versatile in the world.
The Mørch tonearms have amazing mechanical strength and stability. They are the result of correct design fundamentals, high precision mechanics, controlled arm resonances, superior mass distribution and the finest craftsmanship.
The UP-4 is a unipivot design, the pivot itself consisting of a hardened steel pin resting in a concave, polished sapphire bearing. Silicone damping can be easily applied and adjusted as necessary. The DP-6 is a unique dual-pivot design featuring a silicone-damped high precision ball bearing for the horizontal plane, and two precision sapphire bearings for the vertical. Independent damping is possible for the latter plane of motion and easily adjusted to all intermediate levels.
There is a choice of four interchangeable armwands, each featuring a different mass to enable exact matching with vitually any cartridge. In this way, the frequency of the fundamental arm/cartridge resonance can be tuned to the optimum value. Extra armwands can be ordered so you can mount a different cartridge on a separate armwand and quickly swap between them. An optional 12” armwand is also available.
The performance to price ratio of Mørch tonearms is stunning!

Era Gold V
• "Given its price and its miraculous performance - and this agnostic means miraculous - performance, I recommend the GSP Audio Era Gold Mk.V as enthusiastically, if not more so, as I've recommended any product I've reviewed and recommended in all the years I've been doing this." — Michael Fremer, Stereophile.
• "Our first experience of a Graham Slee Projects phono stage was enough to tell us that there was something exceptional and differently conceived... We named the GSP Era Gold V / Elevator EXP combination "Best Phono Stage" in both 2004 and 2005. For moving-magnet and medium-to-high-output moving coils, you just need the Era Gold ; with low-output m-c cartridges, add the Elevator EXP for more gain and load options. Highly musical..." — Highly Recommended, Hi-Fi News.

I heard greater bandwidth, pitch definition, more accurate timbre, quieter backgrounds with dramatically reduced low-level noise and a more open and dimensional soundstage. Instruments and voices were fuller, richer, more natural and thus more believable. There was less of sense of a mechanical or electrical process..." — 6 Moons.com.

P-75 phonostage
• "I think there is a very real risk that the P75 will be overlooked on grounds of price; it's simply too cheap to appeal to some big-spending audiophiles. But that would be a huge mistake. Rondo Bronze
• "It offers a tightly ordered and impressively dynamic sound that can be breathtaking. ... A landmark moving coil bargain." — Hi-Fi World.
• “I think it's safe to say that the Rondo Bronze will please music lovers, perhaps even tortured audiophiles. Why? It is a relative bargain, and it sounds nearly as rich as my three-times-as-costly Koetsu. ...The dynamics of the Rondo Bronze are part of what make this cartridge special. ...The improbably full-sounding Rondo allows detail to shine through and provides more dynamic engagement. Loud, raucous music is better served than it is by the Koetsu. If you value tonal richness and dynamics, do not have a taste for hyped-up detail, but do have a taste for musicality, the Rondo Bronze is a terrific cartridge.” — Positive-Feedback.
Kontrapunkt B
•
"I was astonished by how much musical information the Kontrapunkt B retrieved from record to record... I could hear better what individual instruments were doing. Knocking on the door of Class A and proof that vinyl and analog still rule." — Stereophile, Recommended components.
